Integration of Faith Being theologically educated, ordained to the diaconate, and having a career in education and in licensed mental health practice, I have come to recognize the sometimes complementary and often antagonistic relationship between Orthodoxy and mental health. In this generation, mental health providers have become the “priests” of the secular “church” and superficial engagement of the faithful with the Mysteries and Medicines of the Church sadly leave people to believe that the wellspring of healing and wholeness is found at best in the Church complemented by psychology, or at worst with the idea that “real healing” comes from psychotherapy. As a psychotherapist and deacon in the Church, my desire is to support the rediscovery of wholeness in Christ within the embrace of the Church in its worship, sacraments, and spiritual tradition, while recognizing the often useful but often empty trajectory of “mental health.”
