Ft.Lauderdale(March 18) – Rev. Dr. Christopher T. Metropulos, founder
and executive director of Orthodox Christian Network (OCN), announced
today that the Executive Board of OCN has named Charles Powell the
director of the newly established Development office of the national
media outreach ministry of the Standing Conference of Orthodox Bishops
in the Americas (SCOBA).
Charles Powell, the media director of the ministry since 2003, was
promoted to his new position as of April 1st by the board after a
generous grant from the Farah Foundation. The multi-year grant by the
Farah Foundation was made for the expressed purpose of creating this
new development office to assist OCN in securing the funding to support
a nationwide media presence for the Orthodox Christian churches in
this country.
The grant also allowed OCN to secure the services of Stewardship
Advocates of New York, a full service donor development agency headed
by well respected stewardship expert, Fr. Anthony Scott. Rev. Scott
will work together with Mr. Powell in getting the development office
established and functioning.
Charles Powell has a long time connection with religious media and
religious media organizations and, since his own conversion to Orthodox
Christianity after many years as a media professional for some of the
largest Evangelical media ministries in the country, has wanted to see
the Orthodox Christian churches use the powerful communications tools
of modern media technology to share the riches and beauty of Orthodox
Christianity with the United States and the world.
Mr. Powell’s first task will be to grow the newly established Share The
Light Partners campaign for OCN. This campaign is attempting to find
500 donors willing to invest $1000, $2500, or $5000 a year in the
outreach efforts of OCN to help defray the substantial costs of
expanding the media outreach to the top 25 media markets in the US.
The program is off to a good start, but its success is vital to the
ongoing financial health of OCN. Mr. Powell will also be working with
Orthodox Churches all across America to secure the success of the newly
establish Share The Light Sunday, named this year by the SCOBA Bishops
as the third Sunday in January, by increasing the participation and
education of Orthodox parishes all across the nation.
His Eminence, Archbishop DEMETRIOS, chairman of SCOBA, encouraged all
Orthodox parishes to support the media outreach of the Church by
participating in this annual event.
Powell stated “Media is expensive to produce and to distribute, but
that’s because these media tools work! This is the most media saturated
nation in the world and our Orthodox voice should not be missing from
these important tools. Over two thirds of Americans use radio, TV, and
the internet to learn and explore religious ideas and facts. Our
Orthodox Christian Churchesshould at least have a presence in this
important media world.”
Come Receive TheLightis the flagship radio program of Orthodox

salvation in Jesus Christ while exploring Orthodox Christianity in
